I'm positively thrilled by the fantastic response to the Forager Ruana / Shawl MAL announcement! My testers and I have been keeping our projects under wraps for what feels like eons, itching to share them with all of you.

Seeing all the colorful chatter in our groups about which hues to choose got me so excited that I couldn't resist pushing my initial plan of making a few templates for you a week earlier :). Yesterday, I whipped up about 25 of them, but here's the fun part – some of these templates aren't exactly a match with what's described in the pattern. So, today, I'm here to explain how you can work out the yarn you'll need if your color combo dances to its own tune.

Here is the color layout from the pattern:

​

  • Yarn1 (border background, berries) in red/ 365 Summer Pudding

  • Yarn2 (body background, borders contrast) in gold/ 311 Chai Shortbread

  • Yarn3 (leaves) in green/ 349 Rainforest Cake

To calculate the yarn amount for a different color layout, simply download the PDF below and skip to the table at the end of the file. There, you'll discover the yarn requirements for each part of the ruana or shawl.

Example 1: Let's calculate yarn amount for 2-color version made by the pattern tester Alison Platt:

You will need a following amount of Scheepjes Colour Crafter yarn for a fringed version of a shawl (ruana) :

  • 490 (816) g in in 1708 Alkmaar (blue)

  • 440 (714) g in 1203 Heerenveen (light grey)

Keep in mind that the shawl is 2 repeats wider than the ruana's panel and that the yarn amount differs from Alison's notes because she made a narrower version.

Example 2: One of the combinations that many of you enjoyed:

You will need a following amount of Scheepjes Scrumptious yarn for a shawl (ruana) with fringed edging:

  • in color 365: 29 (50) g

  • in color 311: 461 (766) g

  • in color 354: 440 (714) g

Example 3: Another color combination that captured the hearts of many:

You will need a following amount of Scheepjes Scrumptious Yarn for a shawl (ruana) with a fringed edging:

  • in color 332: 134 (220) g

  • in color 314: 335 (544) g

  • in color 333: 461 (766) g
